Visiting a Literacy Center

For my visit to a literacy Center, I decided to go to the English Language Program (ELP) at UNF. ELP is a department at UNF that teaches internationals students English for academic usage. According to ELP webpage their goal is “to provide international students and professionals an intensive academic experience to provide awareness of international and intercultural understanding”.
I secluded my visit to ELP to be on March 31, 2015, and I emailed them ahead of time to take their promotion on observing one of their classes.  It was Tuesday, and the class that they allowed me to observe was Grammar 3 taught by a male instructor.

The class started at 12:30 and lasted only for one hour. There were 10 students in the class; six of them spoke Arabic, three spoke Spanish, and one spoke Vietnamese. The class had a ratio of eight men to two women, and the topic of the class was modals of necessity.
To my observation, the students worked as individuals and groups during this class. The teacher depended mostly on the board and the projector to delver the information. In getting the response from the students, he relied on the verbal interaction where he asked them questions and got their answers verbally. What surprised me is that the teacher had the students to repeat after him saying the models forms. At the end of the class, the teacher assigned the homework verbally on their textbook, off which I took a picture to share it here with you.

In the end, I spook to the teacher whether they a blackboard or not, and I was really surprised that they did not have it. Therefore, my recommendation is that the ELP program provide the students with blackboard to make it easy for the students to review their assignments and to interact with their teachers and classmate outside the classroom to increase the quality of the education that they give.
